Indian businesses can now buy ChatGPT ads themselves through OpenAI’s Ads Manager at ads.openai.com. The minimum daily budget for accounts billed in rupees is ₹725, roughly ₹22,000 a month. Ads appear below ChatGPT’s answers for Free and Go users. Before you spend anything, make sure OpenAI’s ad crawler can read your landing page and your conversion tracking works.
OpenAI opened self-serve advertising to India on 31 August 2026, alongside Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. For Indian brands, the timing lines up with the festive season, when attention and ad costs both peak. This guide covers what you need to know before launching, the set-up steps, and how to judge a first test honestly.
ChatGPT Ads in India: the key facts
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where do I sign up? | ads.openai.com (Ads Manager, currently labelled beta) |
| Minimum daily budget | ₹725 for INR-billed accounts ($25 for USD accounts). The minimum follows your billing currency, not the country you target. |
| Who sees the ads? | Logged-in adults on ChatGPT Free and Go. Not Plus, Pro or Business users, and not accounts identified as under 18. |
| Where do ads appear? | Below ChatGPT’s answer, labelled as sponsored and separate from the response |
| How do I pay? | Choose views (CPM), clicks (CPC) or conversions (optimised CPC or CPM) |
| Can advertisers see chats? | No. OpenAI says advertisers don’t get access to conversations and see aggregate reporting only. |
| Do ads change ChatGPT’s answers? | OpenAI says advertising doesn’t influence the answers ChatGPT gives |
How ChatGPT decides when to show your ad
This is the biggest difference from Google Ads. There are no keywords to bid on in the usual sense. ChatGPT picks ads based on the conversation and what the user seems to want. You help it by writing context hints: short descriptions of the conversations, topics or phrases where your product is relevant. OpenAI is clear these are hints, not exact-match rules.
If a user has personalisation switched on, the system can also use signals from their wider ChatGPT activity to pick more relevant ads.
What this means in practice: think in problems and situations, not keywords. “Planning a Diwali gift for colleagues under ₹1,000” is a better hint than “corporate gifts”.
Before you launch: four checks
1. Is your business allowed to advertise?
OpenAI’s ad policies prohibit some categories outright, including gambling, alcohol and tobacco, adult content, recreational drugs, counterfeit goods and scams. Financial services, health services and legal services are “restricted” and, at the time of writing, listed as US-only. If you’re an Indian lender, insurer, clinic or law firm, check the current policy before planning a campaign.
Ads also don’t appear next to sensitive conversations, including mental and personal health, politics, self-harm and child safety topics. So even an allowed product won’t show everywhere.
2. Can OpenAI’s ad crawler read your landing page?
OpenAI reviews every landing page with a crawler called OAI-AdsBot. If it can’t reach the page, the ad can’t be approved, and OpenAI says there’s no manual workaround. Add this to your robots.txt:
User-agent: OAI-AdsBot
Allow: /
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
OAI-SearchBot isn’t required for ads, but OpenAI recommends allowing it too, and it matters for appearing in ChatGPT search generally. Also check that Cloudflare, Akamai or any bot-protection tool isn’t blocking these crawlers. Use a normal web page as the destination, not an app-store link, a login page or a chain of redirects.
3. Is your conversion tracking ready?
OpenAI offers a measurement pixel and a Conversions API. If you want to optimise for sales or leads rather than clicks, you need at least one working. Set up the pixel on your thank-you or order-confirmation page first, then add the Conversions API if your developer or Shopify app supports it.
Separately, make sure you can see ChatGPT traffic in your own analytics. Our guide to tracking ChatGPT traffic in GA4 shows how. Tag your ad URLs with UTM parameters (for example utm_source=chatgpt&utm_medium=paid) so paid clicks don’t mix with organic ChatGPT referrals.
4. Is your landing page good enough?
Someone arriving from a ChatGPT conversation has usually just read a detailed answer. They expect the page to continue that conversation, not start from zero. Make sure the page:
- Matches the offer in your ad (OpenAI requires this)
- Shows price, delivery time and returns clearly
- Loads fast on mobile data
- Has one obvious next step
Step-by-step: setting up your first campaign
Step 1: Create your account
Go to ads.openai.com, sign up with a business email and add your business details and billing. Choose INR as the billing currency if you want the ₹725 minimum.
Step 2: Create a campaign and pick an objective
ChatGPT Ads use the familiar structure of campaign, ad group and ad. At campaign level, choose how you want to pay:
| Objective | You pay for | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Every 1,000 impressions (CPM) | Awareness for a launch or sale |
| Clicks | Each valid click (CPC) | Your first test, when you have no conversion data yet |
| Conversions | Clicks or impressions, optimised towards conversions | Once your pixel is recording conversions reliably |
For a first campaign on a small budget, clicks is usually the simplest starting point. You can move to conversions once you have data.
Step 3: Set the budget
Set a daily budget of at least ₹725. Two rules are worth knowing:
- ChatGPT Ads pace spend over a rolling seven-day period, so one day can spend up to twice your daily budget (₹1,450 at the minimum).
- Over any seven days, spend won’t exceed seven times the daily budget (₹5,075 at the minimum).
You can also set a campaign-total budget as a hard cap for the whole test.
Step 4: Choose targeting
- Location: country is required. You can narrow to states, cities or postal codes where available. For a Bengaluru-only service, don’t pay for all-India reach.
- Platform: Android app, Android web, desktop web, iOS app and iOS web. In India, Android will likely carry most volume, so check your Android landing page experience.
- Custom audiences: you can upload hashed customer lists. To target a list it needs at least 25,000 matched users; smaller lists can still be used as exclusions (for example, to exclude existing customers).
Step 5: Write context hints
Write 5–10 hints describing situations where your product genuinely helps. Examples for a D2C skincare brand:
- People asking for a skincare routine for humid weather
- Questions comparing sunscreen types for oily skin
- Gift ideas for women under ₹1,500 for Diwali
Keep them specific and honest. Hints that don’t match your landing page will waste money even if they get impressions.
Step 6: Create the ad
A ChatGPT ad includes your advertiser name, logo, a headline, description text, a landing page link and an image. Check the character limits in Ads Manager when you build it. Write it like a helpful reply, not a banner: say what the product is, who it’s for and one concrete reason to click. Avoid anything that looks like part of ChatGPT’s own interface, which the policies don’t allow.
If you sell many products, OpenAI also supports product feeds that show as carousel cards.
Step 7: Set your bid
OpenAI’s help centre suggests starting CPC bids of $3–$5 for US campaigns. It hasn’t published India-specific guidance that we could find, and Indian costs are likely to differ. Start with a modest bid, watch impressions for two or three days, and raise it gradually if you’re not getting delivery.
Step 8: Launch and wait for review
Once submitted, your ad and landing page are reviewed. If the crawler can’t reach the page, fix access and resubmit.
What can ₹725 a day actually buy?
Honestly, nobody outside OpenAI has reliable India benchmarks yet. Costs depend on your category, competition and how relevant your ad is to the conversation, because OpenAI uses a relevance-weighted auction. Be wary of any article quoting “average ChatGPT CPC in India” as fact.
Here’s how to think about it instead, using an illustrative CPC:
| If your average CPC is… | Clicks per day at ₹725 | Clicks in a 21-day test |
|---|---|---|
| ₹25 | ~29 | ~609 |
| ₹50 | ~14 | ~304 |
| ₹100 | ~7 | ~152 |
Illustrative maths only, not benchmarks. The point: at the minimum budget and higher CPCs, you may get only a few hundred clicks in three weeks. That’s enough to learn whether the channel is worth more money, but not enough to judge small differences between ads.
How to run a fair first test
- Run for at least 21 days. The seven-day pacing means the first week can be uneven.
- Test one product or offer. Splitting ₹725 across five products gives you five useless data sets.
- Use two ad variations at most.
- Decide success in advance, for example “cost per order below ₹X” or “at least Y qualified leads”.
- Compare with Google and Meta. Put the same product’s cost per conversion from each channel side by side.
Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC and CPM, and conversions. Metrics refresh roughly every 15 minutes, but OpenAI says spend data can lag by 7–8 hours, so don’t panic about a quiet morning.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Blocking OAI-AdsBot by accident with a firewall or a “block all AI bots” plugin
- Sending traffic to the home page instead of a page that matches the offer
- Choosing conversion bidding with no conversion data
- Targeting all of India when you only deliver to a few cities
- Judging results after three days
- Mixing paid and organic ChatGPT traffic in analytics because ad URLs weren’t tagged
Is it worth it for Indian businesses right now?
For most small businesses, ChatGPT Ads should be a small test alongside Google and Meta, not a replacement. It makes most sense if:
- Your customers research before buying (considered purchases, B2B services, education, travel, electronics)
- You can already track conversions properly
- You can afford ₹20,000–25,000 for a learning test without needing it to pay back immediately
It makes less sense if you’re in a restricted category, sell mainly impulse buys that do well on Instagram, or can’t measure conversions yet. Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to advertise on ChatGPT in India?
The minimum daily budget is ₹725 for accounts billed in INR, about ₹22,000 over 30 days. What you pay per click or per 1,000 views depends on the auction, your category and how relevant your ad is.
Can small businesses in India run ChatGPT ads?
Yes. Self-serve access through Ads Manager opened to India from 31 August 2026, so you don’t need an agency or a sales contact to start.
Who sees ChatGPT ads?
Adult users on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro and Business users don’t see ads.
Do I need a website to advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes, in practice. Ads need a landing page that OpenAI’s crawler can reach. App-store links and login pages aren’t recommended.
Can I target by keyword?
Not in the Google Ads sense. You write context hints describing relevant conversations, and ChatGPT matches ads to the conversation and user intent.
Will ChatGPT recommend my product more if I advertise?
No. OpenAI says ads don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers. Ads appear separately below the response. Being mentioned in answers is a separate, organic job, covered in our GEO guide.
The bottom line
ChatGPT Ads give Indian businesses a new way to reach people at the moment they’re asking for advice. The entry price is low, but the channel is new and there are no reliable local benchmarks. Treat your first ₹20,000 as tuition: fix crawler access and tracking, test one offer for three weeks, and compare the results with what you already get from Google and Meta.
